Default Fork Oil Change - 1996 FLSTC - Any Hints ?

- hi.

- am planning to change the fork oil on my
1996 FLSTC (Her. Softail Classic) which
carries the , iirc , SHOWA forks.

- any tips / hints beforehand ?

- have already secured the 1 3/8 inch socket
for the shock top-bolts. But the bolts seem to
be really really tight !!

cheers and thanks in advance.

.

Does that have an air front suspension? If it does, buy a vacuum pump and suck the new oil in the bottom. If not, then just drain and fill.

Front end should be off the ground so no weight is on the tire. Also need a good measuring cup that measures off single ounces. I've found it works best if you have an impact screw driver to do initial loosing of drain screw. good luck

- hi and thanks.

- am more worried that after having the top bolts off,
can't get the bolts back on with the spring protruding ?

- its a basic SHOWA , no air pressure at all.

Man, you need to relax, it's as easy as changing the engine oil . The springs aren't going anyware. Next thing on your list after this, is to get a service manual.

Default changing fork oil

Its real easy like outhers have said.. Raise front wheel off the ground remove the top tube nuts (Springs will not come out) remove lower drain screws.. Let drain... put drain screws back in fill with fluid (A good funnel sure helps... put top nuts back on

It's simple as stated above. Under the top bolt there is another that holds everything in the fork tube you'll find a small hole in it to refill the fork tube. I found a measuring funnel at advanced auto that works great.

Use hydraulic forl oil, type E. Your bike will need 11.5 oz in each side.

i heard that adding an extra ounce to each fork helps lessen shake at idle in the handlebars, is this true? not trying to rob the post.
