Putting in .005 over 10.5:1 pistons, port and polish with bigger valves, new springs(depends on cam) push rods, and ignition. What cam would you guys recommend? Which models of S&S, Andrews, Crane how you guys tried and with what sucess? thanks
I type'd out some info and then dumped it to start over. Deside what you want out of it by reading the factory info on cams. Then call and talk to the tech people to help tune your final choice. Lots here like woods and they design good cams it. I like andrews and s&s ,oldschool still. I went from a 115hp bagger to a almost stock fxr ,cam exhaust and carb and am happy. Do compression releases just in case with 10 to one. Is your motor a high milage motor has it already been hammer hard? What kind of bike ,for two up riden or just one ? Is it a only bike that you have and are you rideing longer distance on it ????? You could buy a 100" + ultima motor for well less than 4000 and have a stong NEW motor and bike, maybe 3000 bucks from JIREH.

Eddieflyer, I had my '99 softail built two years ago. New rods, bearings, rebalanced, 10.5-1 Ross pistons, poly rings, one size over valves, heavy spring kits, port & polish, S&S breather gear, S&S 586 cam. Already had a Crane HI-4 single fire ignition, adjustable push rods, Hydrosolid lifters, High flow K&N breather & larger carb jets. You'll love this set up. I'm at 95-100 HP depending on who runs the dyno. I'm running V&H staggered duals with 1/3 baffles. I pulled the motor & put it back after the build. Parts & machine work was only $2600. Hope that helps you decide how to go. An Indy machine shop/ ex pro fuel bike drag racer did the work. No stealerships involved.

What cam do you have or did you have in mind, you never said that?
Do you ride much 2 up? What size of guy are you?
Where do you want your power band to be, low, mid, or high?
I think that these are important questions to know when giving a cam recommendation.
Sorry for the delay guys...work as a pilot and don't see home much. The bike is a 99 NT and I am usually the only one on it. Mostly I'm looking for low to mid range power. For me it boils down to EGO. I love my bike too much to get rid of it but my dad and his 96" inch electra glide can kick my ***. I've got the pistons now(sitting in the garage)...JE 10.5:1 .005 over, a Crane Hi-4 ignition. The heads will be port and polished and the bike has a hooker two into one exhaust. I was thinking about an Andrews 59 cam, but will that be too lean. One of you guys mentioned the S&S 586, I looked that one up and am liking that one better. thanks for the help guys
Dude, do a little homework on thispage too.. I'm sure everyone can give good info too, but there's some great stuff on that site.. There's one particular write-up on a 95hp with your set-up and an SE57 cam, with stock heads and new valves/springs..... They used a new carb, but give options for the CV..
I've got 9.5:1's with an SE11 and a jetted CV with SE slip on pipes and a high flow air filter... I dont know the HP and Tq numbers, but the bike runs really well.. I havent been challenged by any stock bikes. The CV should be able to handle about 90ho from what I have been reading. Plus, I understand the CV is more forgiving than the S&S and Mikuni's. Somewhat self adusting to altitude changes, since its partially vaccuum controlled.
Let us know how it works..
85" Revolution Performance kit on my 93 FXLR at 10.5 to 1 with ported SE heads. V-Thunder EVL 5015 cam, V-Thunder lifters, B-Hive valve springs, TP roller rockers, SE adjustable pushrods, S&S Super E, Dyna 2000 single fire ignition, Samson staggered duals and Baker DD6 transmission. I think you get the idea, the bike runs like the wind and has real "seat of the pants" power and pull.
I need a few more break in miles and need to change the fluids next week. Dyno session is scheduled towards the end of the month. The FXR is a lighter bike and I bought this cam on my head porter and V-Thunders recommendations. You might also want to look into the EVL 5005 or 5010. If you have your heads ported, I'd advise you to go with what your head porter advises. They know what cams work with the work that they do and with your combination.
