Default derby cover

I went to get a derby cover gasket and was given a paper gasket. What happened to the o-ring? My 98 FLHR uses a big o-ring that fits in a groove. They told me the new part is a paper gasket like the twinkies use (but with fewer holes). I tried it without the o-ring and my cover leaked. Is there a part number I can use to get the o-ring?

Thanks,

Richard

I like the new gasket myself. I can reuse it quite a few times before I have to replace it. Just make sure everything is clean before you put it back on and only torque to specs. DO NOT overtighten.

My Evo has always had a cork derby cover gasket. The parts dude used to insist I was wrong, he now knows to order them from James.

When I had the 98 Road King, the switch to the paper gasket was a godsend, so much easier to install, not wondering if the o ring slipped off again!.

Thanks,

Richard
That was the old part number I gave. It's been updated to a "-72" I think he said, and told me it was metal and coated (like many James gaskets) So if they gave you a paper one, it may have been old stock of the new number or something (?)

The o-rings don't go bad typically, just get a little flat after a number of years. And I'm sure they are avaliable thru aftermarket and/or industrial or parts suppliers with o-ring sources.

Richard; if you want an o-ring and have any problem finding one, send me a private message or email and I'll be glad to send you one. I think they were about 4.00 last time I bought one.

The only downfall to the cork that I've found is that it's easy to over tighten the bolts and permanently distort the derby cover. And let me tell ya, that really sucks when it's a Saturday morning and there's nothing but sun and blue in the sky and you just wanna go.

The part number that t150veg gave you is the same one in my '97 parts catalog. Funny thing is, they went back to an O-Ring again in '06 for whatever reason, but when my buddy went to put a new Derby cover on his '08 NightTrain, he had to buy the paper gasket as the aftermarket and accessory covers don't have a channel for the O-Rings. He hasn't had any problems with it leaking though, for what it's worth.

1998 road king evo..i have a round black rubber feel DISK outlined near edge in orange gasket stuff and stamped with an HD symbol and #25416-70A..i like it better than O-ring...BUT if derby cover is warped the O-ring would be better..unless you replace the derby cover $$

Thanks for all the help. The derby cover is a born to ride cover and not the flattest thing on the planet. I got the o-rings last night and the leaking is fixed.
