1997 FLSTC equippet S&S 124 with automatic comp.releases,odyssey battery,heavy duty cables,but not crank good enought.do i need buy stronger starter,if need which:spyke,ultima,hd,all *****,baker...etc,what about size:1,4kw 1,6kw ....2,4kw?
Check battery first to see if it can hold load (Autozone should do it for free.). Then check cables. They may seem good but corrosion inside the cable can cause it to fail under load. If you are using your original cables that may be the problem.
Electric shop should be able to check your starter or there are probably threads that will tell you how. As I recall the service manual is pretty good too.
If you do replace the starter with a bigger one, make sure you have clearance. I had to get a new oil bag on my 87 when I went to a 1.75 Ultima.
engine ,cables, battery and connectors in solenoid are all new, starter is been weak before chancing engine.which starter i choice:top post or angled post,i am heard that spyke have very good torque, but it cost almost triple than ultima, and baker is most expensive.i think that starter himself can be longer than stock but solenoid must be same size than original,am i right?
