Was wondering 92 softail once in awhile i get engine run on for a few seconds and i can here a slight pinging while acclerating.I want to retard the timing a degree or 2 to see if this make a difference. when you go to retard timing do you turn the adjuster plate clockwise to retard?Thx
The cam turns counter-clockwise. So you would rotate the plate counter-clockwise to retard. It's a little hard to get 'em right like that (by feel) because when you tighten the screws it can change sometimes. It's really best to use an advance type electronic timing light and of coarse the clear timing hole plug. And that gets a little tricky if the light doesn't have a setting for 2-cycle engines, as the stock ignition is a dual fire setup.
A few things that can cause the same run-on condition - if it's jetted lean and running hot, that'll do it. And carbon build-up can cause a hot spot in the chamber and cause it also. Actually any reason it's running hot will make it do that. (including poor fuel)
Thx for the info.I just want to retard it a few degrees and see if it make any difference.I been reading that the timing is normally set to 35degrees but alot of guys back it off a few degrees.

Very true and certainly worth a try
If you need any help with the timing lite deal, let us know. Hope that works out good for you.
thats how i timed mine. i had a shop set the timing when they adjusted the rockers. it would ping with high octane and booster added to the gas, they told me that was normal. i popped the timing plate off and turned it back a couple notches and it started right up and stopped pinging. been like that for 6,000 miles now without any problems and oil temps run under 180, even when its 100 degrees out.
