Default oil pump

hey all. i just got my motor back in my bike. fired it up and the oil pump leaks between the pump and the case. i put new gasket in before i put it on but now leaks. is it possible to change gasket without pulling cam chest apart? can it be done on the bike by just pulling the pump? please help as im frustrated. ive been working on it for two days solid now. thought i was good to go.

Wayne,
Da Book sez: The oil pump may be disassembled, piece by piece, without removing gearcase cover, with engine in chassis...
I pulled one on a shovelhead at the camp ground in Sturgis once. It's the same setup.

Nothing spooky about it, but it's tedious, especially if you have the short primary. If you accidently push the shaft in too far, the drive key in the nosecone can fall out.

Are you absoutely certain that is where it's leaking? How far have you ridden it? Reason for asking - first engine I ever built, I took the pump off in-frame 4 times for a leak like that and it was not the pump!

PS; yes there is a key on the drive shaft gear in the nosecone, one on the pressure gear and one on the scavange gear. They need to be "clocked" to about 1 or 2 o'clock position before removing the outer lock ring. The lock-ring on the outboard side is (usually) a flat spring wire type. Other than a good picture, doubtful the book will help you much at all for this procedure. I gotta wonder what you did without the book, considering you split the cases???

ive done almost every motor ive had from 5 different harleys to snowmobiles and dirt bikes. i usually get the book for each. ive done a couple evos before but never removed the pump in frame.i know for sure its leaking there. as soon as i fired her up i seen it pump right there. thats where i was looking right off the bat as the oil pressure switch hole is why i split the cases and i was looking for leak in that area. the guy that had the bike previouse had over tightened the pressure switch and cracked the threads. i got a pretty good deal on the bike for that reason and new that i had to fix. thanx for the help. i found a book in the garage for up to a 1990. looks pretty simple. hope the 92 is the same.
