I have been unable to find a clear answer to a nagging issue with my bike. My throttle really doesn't "return" unless I manually push it there. If I am running down the road and let go, it will reduce some, but not come anywhere close to going back to an idle position. I actually have to twist it back to that spot. I have looked and looked for a spring that would snap it back, but there doesn't seem to be one. I have found an attachment point on the carb, but no place where it would look natural to attach the other end. So, I can ride it fine except it gets a little annoying when you come to a light to have to twist the idle down.
Bike is a 90 FLHTCU with a Keihn carb (pretty sure).
Disconnect the cables at both ends and see if they both move easily, you may find that one of them is binding because it is frayed inside, if so, it is replacement time because it is ready to fail.
Can`t offer a suggestion about throttle return spring, I have a Mikuni carb. on my `89.
All the carbs have had good return springs on our '90 FLHTCU but I still had to play with the stock cables to get the throttle to snap back like it should. Check the cables more closely, especially the one with the switch for the cruise , on mine that will separate some times and hang up. On the original stock carb the shaft was slightly bent and would bind, for a while I ran it with the nut that holds the linkage on a little loose. I sent the carb to Wally Kerstetter in Sunbury Pa. and he sent me a replacement that looked like new and worked better than any other times when other shops worked on it. I bought new replacement cables without the cruise switch but never got them installed. I now use a 45 mm Mikuni carb and I took the cables out of the holder on the frame to let them bend a little more naturally.
If you are concerned about the carb, contact Wally Kerstetter in Sunbury Pa as he can work on it and send it back looking and working better than a new one and set up properly -all at a reasonable price. I sent my stock carb via Priority Mail to him on a Friday and got one back on the following Tuesday, and it was fully polished and looked better than a low mileage takeoff '06 carb I purchased previously. I don't remember the cost, but it was less than $150.
