Default Need advice

Bought my first Harley 1998 FLSTC the work on the scoot is amazing the guy spent fortunes on it. Now to the point it had only done 11,000 miles 5,000 in the last 5 years so got my spanner man to do a major service and go through the bike asked him about another cam when he brought it back.He said I should check with the previouse owner as the ignition was upgraided to a crane fireball hi-4e ajustable rev ignition system . The last owner never done it and I cant get the 1st owner . My question why would anyone upgraid to this system on a standard engine the reason I'm saying this is the money spent ie custom paint , large touring tank 7thousand pounds spent on chrome and other peices cant beleive he would'nt put anything into the engine ?????

Your dedutction is logical. However we installed a lot of aftermarket ignitions because people wanted single fire or the adjustable rev limiter.

Pop open the pushrod tubes and see if you have adjustable pushrods. If you do, you likely have had the cam changed. Hopefully they changed the cam bearing while they were in there.

Maybe he just wanted a few more reveloutions and power out of the engine and didn't feel comfortable cracking it open to do any other mods. The ignition is basically a bolt on deal nothing major.

Im intrigued by this statement....Is this true? Do most of you have aftermarket ignitions?

Not me. I'm running the stock ignition on my 98 RKC.

Yep, Crane HI-4. Back then single fire was all the rage plus you could raise the rev limit. Almost nobody had a dyno cell and even fewer knew how to use one so there was almost no info regarding power gains from single fire ignitions. Just the say-so of a salesman or service tech. If I knew then what I know now an SE module is what I'd have.
I still have the stock ignition though and when this Crane unit breaks it's going back on.

SE. The stock 86 advance curve left a lot on the table.
