Default Coil f/ single fire

Coil died on my Ultima ignition (Dyna 2ki) yesterday in the rain but came back just long enough to get me in, which was a minor miracle. I think it was a cheap chinese model that came with the kit from Midwest. I've not been able to tell much, if any difference between the single and dual fire setups but I do kinda like this module and now I'm running on my spare OEM stock coil and I'm OK with that except I'm without a spare and trying to decide whether to pickup another stock coil or try a better quality single fire coil.

Any ideas other than stay away from "wild rider" and other obvious junk. Accel, Dyna Tek, stick with stock .. what you all think?

Sometimes ya already know an answer and just have to hear it spoken outloud

I can pickup 3 OEM coils for the price of one single fire coil of any reputable quality - ain't worth the difference.

Thanks Doug

I like stock stuff too, i had a crane ignition on my fxr, and it was very problematic, i cant imagine needing any more than the stock 40,000 volt coil to fire the motor off. just my two cents.

Ok guys, I guess I will disagree about stock ignitions. My experience with them is not as good. Had many fail and strand me over the years with different bikes.

Right now I wouldn't buy any other system other than a Dynatek. They have been top notch and their customer service is great!

I run their 2Ki on my Fatty w/single fire 3 ohm coils. I had an issue a few years back with which I clearly picked to be the ignition which turned out to be one bad coil. They had me send them the 2 coils to test out and sure enough one of them was bad, guess what, yep, they sent me 2 NEW coils FREE of charge back!

I have also had a Crane System too. Good ignition, priced right.

Learned something new with your post...didn't know you could use a stock dual fire coil with a single fire ignition....The twinkies are single fire, maybe you could use a stock twinkie coil with the ultima/dyna ignition, not sure ...just a thought. Only real benefit of single fire is quicker starts and smoother idle, no performance gain.

Yep, Dyna 2ki and probably most others, you simply flip a switch and use the trigger lead for the rear cylinder connected to the stock type coil for dual fire. That's how I'm wired with a stock coil now. If a single fire coil is used for dual fire, you simply run a jumper acress the 2 primary terminals. The diagrams that come with nose cone mounted modules show all that, and it's quite simple actually.

I do like my 2ki module and that certainly speaks well for their customer service. I may go with a genuine Dyna coil next time. I wondered whether anyone had experience with an Accel. I've heard some negative things about the electrics in other areas lately, but their coils carry a lifetime warranty (?) ...

I don't think you can use a twinkie coil on an Evo... the ohm values are different!

I just installed a Daytona Twin Tec ignition on Bertha a month ago. It's switchable between single-fire and dual-fire modes. I used the single-fire mode and their single-fire coil, and I had to run a separate wire from the separate single fire lead on the ignition up to the coil. The Twin Tec can also run in dual-fire mode with a stock dual-fire coil, in which case you don't need to use the separate single-fire lead at all.

I actually don't have to flip any switch. Give me a day to figure out how I did it and I will post up to explain. I'm getting old and developed a sever case of CRS.... :lol

Being in the Auto Parts/Manu business for a long time, Accel has a great reputation with their parts, I honestly can't say how their bike stuff is...

Rufus,
Gotta Dyna DC6-5 Twin Fire II single fire on mine. It's never missed a beat, but I do carry a new spare on long trips though just in case. Betcha wish we'd had gone together now. Glad you got back in safely bro.
