"Mechanical fingers"-- good name. I have that and one of those "magnet on an expandable stick thingies" that works well too.
I bought it at a hardware shop in Tokyo a few years ago and the magnet is very, very strong-- to the point that sometimes it 'sticks' on the way into the needed area. It will pick up a short ratchet extension with a socket on the end and it's invaluable to me...
