I broke my drive belt last night. These suckers are expensive. $200 ouch.
Only 31K on the clock - Is this a normal thing?
Backing out of the garage headed for Home Depot, put it in first, ease out on the clutch, and... nothing!!! Look under the bike and there lays my belt. This is gonna be a lotta money since I dont do my own maintanence
Have a look at the failed belt. When mine broke you could see where a stone had got onto the belt and gone round the pulley, breaking 3 of the kevlar strands.
If there is no visible impact damage then it was probably a manafacturing fault - ticking time bomb.
I had a stone break a belt at 45000mi then I broke another one 2800mi later just like you - shifting into first when stopped. It was obviously faulty but do you think the dealer would replace it under warranty??? Not a chance.
Its been said the labor is pricey on the replacement, What are we talking
for book hours here? 4hrs?
I would guess more than that since the primary has to come off and the entire rear has to come out of the bike. Just a guess at probably 6-8 hours "book time".
A couple of years ago I ended up with not one but two rocks in my belt. The first one was near the center and it lasted 5k with no problems. The second one was near the edge so I decided to get it traded out. I was in a hurry and the indy was booked out for a bit so I took it to the dealer. Had them throw new rear brakes and a rear tire when they had it apart. The total was $1,275.
1275? Ouch. I wonder what the chain tensioner is gonna look like... bike has 31K on it.
Where the belt actually broke, there was just a small area that was real shinny, and the rest of the break was old and dirty. Indy thinks the belt has been damaged for quite some time. Good news is, I was in my driveway when it happened. Bad news is its gonna hurt my wallet for sure. But I thought I had a noise in my tranny all this time, he says I shouldnt be surprised if that noise goes away with the new belt. It was kind of a clicking sound at a certain rpm.
I drive like a sissy most of the time, so Im sure it wasnt abuse
I had mine damaged from picking something up on the road which also did a number on the rear sprocket. Good news it lasted 83,435 miles and still looked like it could go many more miles. Labor was 297.00 bucks for 3 hours. Parts were 400.92.
