Default Taking a step back one day.

It is funny to me that I purchase one Harley only finding myself trying to figure out how to afford the next. Not too long ago I bought my first Harley Davidson. It is an 05 RK Custom in white pearl and I am not sure if I could be any happier with it. In a moment of weakness once or twice I have considered trading it on a new Road Glide or Street Glide. Luckily for me, my wife has been there, and has helped me to keep my head on straight. In fact, according to her, I am not allowed to get rid of this bike. She also loves the way it looks and really does not care for the look of the fairing or tour pack.

So I guess I will be keeping this one to avoid a war that I know I can not win.

I can tell you that I have always been a fan of the EVO engine. I know quite a few people who still ride and enjoy them quite a lot. I have always been told that it is the best engine Harley ever made. So I have decided to go in the opposite direction of many people. I think, when the time is right, I am going to look around for a good deal on a early 90's Ultra or Electra Glide Classic. To me, the bikes look just as nice, if not better then what is being produced today. I love the engine, and would love to have something that I do not have to plug in to find out what is wrong with it. Maybe I will get lucky and find something with around 30-40K on it. Then I can have a long haul bike and a longer haul bike.

Sorry for the long post. I really just wanted to see what the thoughts are of the people that own them. I know they older bikes do not have fuel injection, six speed trannys, electronic throttles, or ABS, but I think that is what really turns me on to them.

Thanks for your time,

Adam

Yeah, those are some of the advantages to having an older bike. No $200 fee to reflash the computer when you make an engine modification. Easy and cheap to re-jet carbs. No need to dyno-test. No noisy six-speed tranny. Nice efficient QUIET gear-drive cam. And I'm just waiting for the first runaway Harley due to the computer-controlled throttle and brakes.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding a low mileage Evo. You sure never see them being ridden any more.

You are right about not seeing them anymore. It seems like everything I see on the road is almost brand new. Don't get me wrong, I do like the advances in technology, but I also like simplicity. I love me 05, but it seems to have as much computer control as my car. Just makes it a little harder to work on for me.

It is funny you say that about the runaway Harley. I was looking at a new RG the other day and we were talking about the throttle. I asked the dealer if there have been any problems with the bike Camrying into the back of another car. He said no, but I would not believe how much his is asked that question. I guess the real funny thing is that my wife actually drives a 2010 Camry. Thought about trading it in and they said they would give me 3 Skittles and half a Pop Tart for it.

I got my 96 a few months ago with 18k original miles from the original owner who was 70 or so. I ride it everyday its not raining or snowing and love it. I even had a guy offer me his 02 in trade for it and I turned him down. He hated the fuel injected newer models. I just can not see dropping that kind of money on something that will do no more then what I have now which is get me to work and back.

You are not alone on working backwards in time. I went from an 04 FI bike to an 03 carb model. I like the older Evos too. I have thought about picking up a Shovel or an Evo for a second bike. First Harley I ever rode was a shovel.

I see an evo everytime I ride also. Mine! Most of the other bikes out there are twinkies.

I got my evo in 02 with 6000 miles on it and now have over 50,000 on it. I love mine. I have learned alot about it doing things to it myself. Would love to have a Road King one day, but will never get rid of my evo to get one.

Good luck in your search!

It just seems to me, that other than the frame in 09 and the engine and tranny, the Electra Glides have not changed that much. I work with a guy at the fire department that rides an 88 Tour Glide (I think that is what the touring model of the Road Glide was called, please correct me if I am wrong). He has had the bike since the early 90's and it only has 32K on it. He tells me that he would never sell it for something new. Just too much money.

That brings me to my last point. If I focus in on buying new, with all the latest gadgets, then I am very limited in what I will own. I look at a new Ultra and realize that it cost just about the same as my wife's new Sport Camry. Or I can go spend 7 or 8K on a very nice bike, that someone else has loved and cared for, and in my mind be just as happy if not happier.

I was even looking at some old, mid 90's, police bike listings. I have seen some of them go for around 4K with 35K on them. I know they are ridden hard, but it sure would be fun to fix one up the way I wanted.
