Default Rebuild forks 1984 flhtc

I have air leaking at the fork cap on my 84 flhtc. So I guess I will pull both forks and rebuild them. Now should I get the parts from HD or look at eBay? And how hard is it to do? I have done them before on my rice burner. And one thing I see in the service book I should have a rubber spacer on the tube. I don't do I need it?

The rubber sleeve is just a fork stop. I don't think they've ever touched anything on my '87. You'll need to pull the entire dash and the cowel it mounts to. Once you get there, it's simple and you'll also have to reomve the top of the tree to get the nuts/plugs off, but that will not affect the steering neck bearings or that adjustment. Good time to check the "swing" though. The parts are simple, mainly two big o-rings on the fork caps and flat aluminum and/or fiber washers for the air ride manifold banjo fittings. You really don't have to remove the forks at all... I bought a "kit" from James my parts dealer had ordered for someone else that never picked it up and ther o-rings weren't correct and I only used 4 of the metal washers and some fiber ones I already had so I'd go with OEM parts since all that would be less than 10.00 anyway.

Be careful to keep the gauges upright so the oil doesn't spill. Take a look at how the wires and such are placed before you get the gauges all the way off if this is the first time you've pulled it - there's not a lot of space in there.

Also there's a 6 or 8 wire connector by the fork on the carb side - you may want to note the colors before you start pulling anything - hard to figure out once they are disconnected.
