Default fork slider install parts

Well I went to my local shop and they have the $40 kit to rebuild the forks but do I really need all those parts? Seems like I just need new seals which should be cheaper than $40 per fork. Oh yea they only sold me one kit bc they thought it had enough for two forks lol go figure. Its only enough for one as far as I can tell. So my question is what parts do I really need?

Fwiw I saw the thread from a few days ago with part numbers in it but only a couple of the numbers were correct and still active when I had them look them up.

Yes, you need them. Trust me, you'll want seals that don't leak, and copper bushings with fresh teflon.

Be happy, the cost of that kit actually went down over the past few years.

Do your seals leak now? Its hard to say if you need any of it until you pull the assembly and inspect the parts. Several years ago I bought a complete service set of seals and bushings before doing some fork work, only to find that I didn't need any of it. They're still sitting in my pile of uninstalled parts, cause I'll probably need them eventually. Old but fully serviceable parts may still show some signs of wear. Installing all new fork seals and bushings may introduce some additional stiction that will require some break in to loosen up. Just considerations, not trying to justify or convince you one way or the other.

I always replace the oil seals, the gasket at the top that is used with the fork cap bolt (looks similar to a water hose gasket) and the 6mm screws and copper washers at the bottom that screws into the damper tube.

The most expensive stuff in the kit has to be the collars and all and I can't imagine I need them at 15k miles

Do the wole nine yards. I just rebuilt the forks on my XL and FX in the last month. You'll be surprised how nasty that oil is when you drain it. It's just good maintenance.

You should buy a set then and compare the teflon on your 15k bushings vs. the new ones. You'll see the copper worn through after 15k miles of use. I did on my bike ('10 FLHX). If they're not worn, return the parts. Either way $80 is cheap compared to everything else on the bike.

I bought two kits for mine, since I was taking the forks apart, I might as well replace everything that could wear out. The bushings on my bike showed a lot of wear at 11k miles. Be forewarned, it doesn't include the top nut rubber seal or the drain screw copper washer. The metal spacer ring and wavy clip are probably the only overkill, but don't add much to the cost of the kit. Joe

15k I would just use all the parts in the kit and be done with it. The difference in cost between the kit and just individual seals is maybe $50. For piece of mind, I would spend the extra $50 and know that I would have new forks again.
When I disassembled mine for powdercoating, I only replaced the seals and crush washer. But I only had 500 miles on it.
