bike pick up a skip at idle and low rpm. i change the slow jet and clean carb. still running rough. change plugs and wires and no change. change intake and carb gasket with new ones, still running bad. went back in and clean carb again. still no change. check my ign. and coil wires and they look good. both plugs are a greyish color. check compression, 150 and 150. I am at a lost. problems is alot worse when cold out side. spits back through carb a good bit. can also tell a noticeable lost of power. anyone have a clue to what kind of problem I may have? running out of answer
sorry about that. it is a 1990 fltc with a cv carb. I think I may have found the problem. this morning decided to take intake off and give it another look when I notice two washers on the wrong side of the intake flange. how could I have done that? must have been in a hurry or I didn't have my glasses on. put washer on the correct side and put it back together and fire it up. sounds good. I need to take it out for a spin to be sure, but I think that done the trick. thanks
update: that did not fix problem. the engine feels like it has lost power. there is a noticeable skip at idle. I'm thinking firing system. maybe I'll start with the pickup sensor and replace it. after that the ignition module, and then the coil. I have been through the carb enough to be satisfied it's not fuel related. am I missing anything. really would like this problem behind me.
don't know for sure, but i believe it was the hose going to the voes. i replace it with a new hose at one time that wasn't a vacum hose, and i believe the hose was colasping on me. i replace the hose again with a reinforce hose and bike started running better. I made other changes but i think the hose was my biggest problem.
Thanks. Had a similar issue with the gas tank vent hose being real easy to bend and collapse. Upgraded it to a lot better hose. I found the original had been plugged by dead bugs, could have been the reason it collapsed under the vacuum it was supposed to relieve.
Actually it would have been a timing issue if the VOES was not functioning. This is a vacuum advance, just like a car for higher speed the timing is slightly shifted. Opposite is true to that it may effect low speed idle if hung up and keeping the sensor engaged ... or maybe it's just the opposite ... whichever, it effecting the idle is possible but generally it's acceleration.
But hey we all know by now that even knowing what to do is still only a small part of getting it right ... LOL

I would start with the least expensive things first. Spark plugs, plug wires, coil, ign. module. In that order, and one at a time, IE plugs first, if no improvement, then wires, etc etc. Some times it is just the little things that mess things up. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find. TJ
