Default Helmets

Wondering about what helmets you guys have. I got a buddy's german dot right now but the darn thing likes to flip up when I'm riding. Looking for a new one but what has worked well for you guys?

I use a German flip-up! A Schuberth C2. I tell a lie - I have two, saintly white for the Harleys and malevolent black for Buttercup the Buell. She's a kinda Evo!

I wear a H-D black chrome half helmet with big "fly eye" goggles I got from Cap'n Itch, a HDF sponsor. I hate FF helmets, and don't really even like 3/4 helmets. Of course, Bertha has a big-*** oversized windshield - so I don't have to be concerned with wind in my face. But those huge goggles would take care of any wind, and they fit over my glasses, which is very nice.

My wife has a genuine "Harley" full face and I a cheap "Pep Boys" fullface, don't remember the brand. We hardly ever use the fullface, I just can't see well enough with a full face helmet. Most of the time we use KBC half helmets that are fitted with J&M headsets in the neck curtains. Recently, I purchased a pair of GPX DOT half helmets from JakeWilson that were on sale for $19.99 each. J&M has headsets for the half helmets that don't use the neck curtains and I am thinking of getting a pair of those as our other headsets & helmets are a few years old. I know the fullface offer the best protection, but I really like the half helmets best, when it gets cold we wear masks.

Fulmer V2. It's an awesome helmet, but it does get a little warm on hot days.

non-DOT Beanie right now, but they're changing the helmet laws here soon. I'll have to start looking for something else I guess. I hate helmets!

After paying about $330 for the "safest" 3/4 helmet (I was uneasy going from full to 3/4 because of safety) and wearing it only once because it cought so much wind, I went back to the internet to research other makes. Ran across a study somewhere that basicaly concluded that expensive DOT helmets don't protect any better then cheap DOT helmets. I ordered a $50 Daytona ('the smallest DOT 3/4 helmet ever made') and have loved it. Not as much padding but light and comfortable enough.

Sounds like a lengthy article I also have read. To clarify what it says, a very expensive helmet provides a level of protection to the head which is not survivable by the rest of our body! In other words if a rider is involved in a severe accident in which his head is subjected to the levels of impact which that helmet provides, he will also suffer such severe injuries to the rest of his body that he won't survive.

I interpret that by buying a good quality helmet, but not the highest spec. After all we want to be comfortable while wearing the things! That article was criticising the top specifications of helmets and the drive to ever stronger helmets.

I've got a couple Shoei half helmets with the zip on/off ear flaps. They are great for spring and fall wear. I've had them since 1993, so I imagine they should be replaced. But that's not going to happen unless they end up MIA. I also have a non DOT half helmet that I wear during the heat of summer.

To be honest, I look for the lightest weight helmet that fits me and doesn't make me look really geeky.
