Default voltage regulator install

I got a new regulator to replace the one that burned up recently. I have a question on the wire going from the regulator to the circut breaker. Do you have to lift the gas tank up to route the wire on the frame? I disconnected the old wire and just pulled it through under the tank.

That should be OK. Ideally, though, you want to make sure that the wire is not loose. Loose wires move around, especially on a Harley, and moving wires cause insulation to rub off and copper strands to break inside. Both are bad. The best thing is to do is route the new one just like the old one and tie it off really well with nylon ties so it won't move. That's how I wire bikes/cars.

Big +1, don't let the wires move around.

I know its a PITA to pull the tank. But do it right so you only have to do it once. Get some zip ties. On my bike the wire runs along the lower part of the frame. It not to bad to run.

I really can't see how the wiring runs with the tank in place,I'll remove the tank to make it easier to route the wire. Thanks for the help.

Not sure if its just on my bike but the wire is routed down the side of the frame under the motor and comes up kind of with the oil lines by the tank and then to the circuit breaker.

Same as my '91 FLHS Bagger. Seems the Dynas, Fatboys, etc. have the wire going under the tank as the main circuit breaker is up under the seat somewhere? Ours is on the right side under the cover near the oil tank. I recently replaced a failing voltage regulator with barely 10k miles on it and took some advice ( good I thought) I saw on another thread here. He mentioned that the vibration due to hard mount of the regulator can cause insulator cracking on the regulator ( bottom side) allowing moisture to get in hence failure. He recommended "rubber mounting" the regulator and running a ground wire from the regulator directly to the neg. battery terminal. I used some old rubber barrel gasket material and ran the ground wire plus installed a voltage LED monitor on my bars next to the console wired to the load side of my "lights" circuit breaker. All is well now and I can watch the voltage go up and down with the rpm's at a glance down. Peace of mind is worth a lot and didn't cost much at all in this case.

Default Connecting,not routing

Mine routes under the frame, but I disconnected it to pull it off the bike and test it because something keeps tripping the 15A accessory circuit breaker with the kill switch in the run position. I tested the VR diodes off the bike, and it tested good. But I forgot to mark where the hot lead ran to. Does anybody know where it runs? Would it be the battery terminal on the main circuit breaker?

I just cut the old one at the regulator and use it to pull the new one through on Dynas...that is assuming it hasn't been cable-tied in place.
