Question sputter at low oil temp

Hey Folks,
Just a quick intro, I've been ridin since I could reach the ground on my old mans dirt bike and have worked on everything from tanks to tonka trucks. I've have gotten much useful info from this forum and I have decided it was high time I joined in..... and I have a problem thats been stumpin my brain and would like a little feedback. I've got a custom hardtail bike that I built in 2007 w/ 1999 crate evo with ev-27 cam and a newly rebuilt top-end and put about 35,000 mi on so far. It obviously has had many issues over the past 3-years but recently its been sputtering like an ole volkswagon at an oil temp of about 150 deg. so its not really hot and it goes away when I stop and let it cool could it be that the coil is getting hot and misfiring?????

Welcome to the Evo forum! Lots of good folks on here who have tons of knowledge about the venerable Evo engine. I don't really include myself in that august company, BTW... as I'm just a weekend warrior. But I've learned a ton of things on this forum!

Bertha started sputtering like that, only after she got warm, a few months ago. I couldn't figure it out, and one evening I noticed sparks at the top of her engine while I had her running in the garage looking for something else. Turned out that I had not properly routed the plug wires through the loops on the frame, and one of them was laying too close to the rocker cover, and was sparking against it. I rerouted them to get the wire away from the engine, and problem solved. I don't know why she only started cutting out after she got warm and not while she was still cold, but she did.

Your problem is probably something else, but I just thought I'd throw this out there... just in case!

The coil problem can be intermitten. It normally rears it's ugly head when it's warm/hot. The wires can also have an effect. I'd make sure your ign.wires going to the Neg. and Pos. of the coil are tight.

Check your plug gap & confirm your heat range on them. Get it to sputter at night & look for arking from your plug wires as well as the plug boot area. Coils can break down if they over heat, I think there is a resistance test you can do on them but Im drawing a blank.
Make sure your fuel line is not touching your cylinder heads. I had to insulate mine with a larger slip over tube to protect the line from excess heat.
keep us posted on this problem!
hatch.

What ignition are you using? Some are known for acting like that when they go bad.

I replaced the coil 2day because I noticed a large crack. Still doin it. Its an aftermarket single fire ignition don't remember the brand. My fuel line is close to the rocker box, not on the head but it still gets pretty hot up there I'll rerun that 2morow. I also want to check the adjustments on my pushrods it could be holdin the valves open when the oil gets hot.Hope it's not the ignition that can get expensive and a PIA. Post more in the afternoon.

Try heating the pick up in the cone with your 'ol lady's hair dryer when the bike is cold, then start it. If it runs bad, it's the ignition.

And, the air temp gauge is THE most worthless thing mounted on a bike.

Thumbs up

And the winner is Beemervet in the shed with the hair dryer. Yup the ignition module was toast. Evidently a piece of the plastic housing cracked and when it got hot it starting crappin the bed. Thanks for the advice.
