Bugs
Yes those locusts are going to be a real problem this year. They will be around for a good while because as the spring develops in different areas they will be like a "rolling swarm" taking flight at different times in different places as the ground warms up enough for them to hatch.
On other creatures:
We riders downunder have great concerns about hitting animals on the road. I haven't heard of a rider hitting a camel (yet) because they are so far "outback" I don't think there are normal roads nearby-- only dirt roads and tracks but kangaroos and especially wombats are nasty in the more coastal areas.
The general rule of thumb in the "outback" and coastal country areas is --no riding near or after sunset at all....
Wombats are cute hairy 4 legged creature about as pig as a medium size pig and built like a tank. These can damage the suspension of a car when run over, and if you hit them on a bike you will go down.

Kangaroos are another big problem. They are just like deer about running onto a road when unexpected-- also bad news.
But back to the bugs-- My ride will look like the pics that rivercityslim posted in a few weeks as soon as the BUGS come out.
With a little luck the locusts won't make it as far south as I live-- I hope...
