I use a plastic soda straw in the spark plug hole to find top dead center.

I hate to bug into your thread but I have a question. My bike has Screamin' Eagle pushrods. When I recently had my cam installed I watched the guy as he told me, then showed me that he went 2.5 total turns to adjust my pushrods. Is that correct or should he have gone 3.5???

Count the threads (use a thread gauge) and do the math, Baron.

Screamin' Eagle uses 24tpi so 2.5 turns is good.... Vthunder says to use 3 turns or 18 flats on thier pushrods and they're also 24 tpi. Who knows? I've used 2 and 3/4 turns on SE rods cause they have four flats instead of six so it's easily done and runs quieter than 2.5 turns, at least on Andrews EV27.
