Default Primary Chain Tension question

Setting the primary chain tension on my 97 softail. The manual gives me a range of movement but is the range in ONE direction only or is it total up and down? I feel like I cannot get it tight at all. But maybe I am putting too much pressure on it? I certainly don't want to overtighten. In case you are wondering why I am messing with it, I had to pull the motor nut to fix a stator plug leak.

Thanks for any help

Don't check tension in just one place, as it can differ around the chain, so rotate the chain and check in several positions. Safest way is to put the bike in gear and push it to and fro, not to start the engine!

According to my service manual (1984-90 models) slack in the upper chain run should be 5/8"-7/8" when cold. Hope that helps.

It does but want I don't understand is that slack in one direction. Meaning from center line and up. Or is it a total of all the way down and all the way up.

It's the total. A chain always sags in the middle, so there will only really be free slack upwards, with just a little if you press it down. So push the chain down gently with a finger, then upwards ditto and measure the movement. Don't press hard, the slack is described in my book as 'free'. You may find where the chain is loosest there is more than the specified amount, but the important thing is to get that slack in the tight spot. Every chain has one!

If you have it too tight, you will find that it's a cow to get into neutral!
Hatch.

If you are unsure, remember too loose is always better that too tight...too loose = noise...too tight = parts damage

10-4 guys thanks a bunch. I have actually pulled the primary off completely and given her a good inspection. I think everything will be good to go. I really love this EVO forum. Good advice.
