I finally waited long enough that I could justify tearing into a perfectly good running engine (even though it was still running fine).

I did an EV27 cam, KB 9.5 pistons/rings, SE pushrods, harley B lifters, intake/exhaust valves and springs, and a S&S Super E.

Like you I had no real complaints before (except the original carb was kind of crappy), but I love it now.
I was thinking about switching over to a mid grade cam on my 85 but if I have to do all this I think I may wait untill I can justify it as well. After all if it aint broke dont fix it.

Go to your local dealer, they should have one in stock.

You are correct. My dealer only ever stocks the torrington now but you may want to ask for the "Full complement bearing upgrade" and look in the box before paying for it.

Use a sheet of stiff but thin plastic in a horseshoe to hold them up....or just remove the lifter blocks and make life easier and quickerer......

I never have been able to figure out exactly when Harley went from the flat top pistons to pistons with valve notches, but I think it was sometime in 1985. I was never sure about mine, but when I took it apart they were flat top. No valve notches. A "bolt-in" cam would have clearance problems. I guess you could find out with a bore scope in the spark plug hole.

Your bike is an `89, it originally came with the Torrington B-138 cam Bearing, so you are ok there.

It would be a good idea to toss the lifters into the scrap bin and replace them while the cam chest is open.
