Default 100" Fatvo is this a good idea?

I'm looking into building a bagger, it's a 90 FLH with a good primary and transmission, everything works electrically and mechanically but the old engine is getting weak. I don't want another 80" Evo. I just spent a few days riding in southern California on a 96" Street Glide and I like the way that bike ran. Basically I want to duplicate it with an Evo era bike.

I've searched all the threads on Ultima's, S&S, etc. and I'm wondering if the Sputhe Fatvo might be a better way to go, assuming I can keep it in budget, brand new bottom end and Ebay cylinders with ported/polished heads and an SE 52mm CV for a mixer. Budget is more or less $7,000 for a complete engine, I'll install it myself.

I am building what you speak of right now from scratch. I am going to be using a Southern Motorcycle Works 113" in mine. The motor complete is around $4600 in black and chrome. Google them and call them up. They pre-run and time all the motors before they ship and have a 3 year warranty. The EVO motor has been around a long time. I would not want to build a hybrid like the Fatvo into a bike, but that is me. A good EVO is bulletproof when taken care of.

Just talked to a gal at SMW and she told me that these engines are Ultima bottoms with some Harley parts in the tops.

I would think a 107" or 113" stroker kit tossed in your existing engine with some simple head work and a new carb would make butt loads more power than a Fatvo for about half the 7K budget.

Kinda what i got from them on the bottom ends. From what they told me (I talked to one of the shop guys), they use a made in the US bottom end from Ultima and build the motors in their shop. If you look on the build sheet for them, they use Crane pushrods, Harley rockers, S&S cards and a few other things. Apparently they set out to fix the known problems of the Ultima engine and replace them with known quality parts. Still sounds like a good engine in my opinion. I am having a hard time justifying buying a S&S for the same price I can get a SMW 113", belt drive, tranny, starter and a whole list of other parts. The 3 year warranty is nice also.

Let me add a disclaimer: if I already had a HD Evo that was tired and wore out, I would reuse it. Have it completely torn down and the cases split. Have all the bearings, races, etc replaced and everything cleaned up and fixed. Then, have it built up to a 113" with good, QUALITY parts and use it.

Stock cases need the spigots bored really thin to accept a Axtell 107" and stock heads need major work to support a 107", I have already looked into it because I wanted stock appearing parts but not worth it.

Can't comment on the Fatvo but my beliefs is a big heavy bike needs more stroke(4 5/8) to create lower end torque and a smaller stroke(4 1/4) large bore engine is a little higher in the rpm range to create power but seeing the Fatvo a perfect fit for a Softail and bounce the rev limiter.

A $3500 Ultima 113 or 127 and have it cleaned up by John Sachs in Florida is a reliable weapon ready to drop in and what I will do next time, this post is just my view on engines looking at power to cost ratio and just a view.
