OK ... first off yer fine. Think about it. A 12 year old bike with 10K... this thing has been sitting and neglected. Harleys dont like to be neglected, I know, trust me I know. Only way to get a better idea on yer belt is to get it up in the air and rotate the wheel. As far as electricals - abuse. This thing needs a little love and attention. I bought a 98' hertage classic softtail ... this thing needs love also... I am working on her slow but sure ... but just like your new bike ... show her ya care and it will be fine ... alot like women. She was abused by her former man, she just needs a good man to care and buy her pretty things. I am just lucky I got another bike to get around. Which I might add just locked up the front end on me, but managed to git er' home.

Don't be frustrated. You just need to exorcise the DPO elements, and it sounds like you are well on the way.

I assume you mean the whine comes when you are coasting in neutral? At what speed?

How tight is the belt? You need the belt tensioning tool to measure how tight it is. There is a recent thread here on measuring it without the right tool, but starting with the right tool is always best, and it isn't very expensive.

You do have the factory shop manual, right? You need that.

Also, check the alignment on the belt. Put the rear up in the air, bike in neutral, spin the rear wheel. The belt should kinda stay centered and not want to walk to one side or the other. There are more "scientific" methods of checking the alignment, but that works for me.

Good advice given. This bike has been neglected and its not happy, give it what it needs and it will treat you well.

I have a 95 heritage with 9500 miles on it that i got last november and it was also making noise and it was because the belt was too loose.
i tightened the belt and 2000 miles later no noises. i have had no other problems with my low mileage older bike. it runs like new.

The belt whine may just be because it is tight, or the rear wheel is out of alignment.
