I got the CV carb put on my bike last week and aside from needing a larger main it is great! I do have one question though. I got a parts carb with the one that i put on my bike.
The one that I put on looked like it had the older butterfly style carb accelerator pump mod.(new housing and drill a hole into the bowl to allow faster filling and a larger pump shot I believe) I soldered the hole in the bowl shut and used the pump housing off of the parts carb, it looks like most of the ones on ebay.
Now I have looking for a new float bowl, because I dont trust the solder not to come loose. It appears that this was a factory installed part on some carbs.

My question is did it do the same as the older carb and should I use it?
That kit was put out to correct some issues with the CV carbs of that era. here is a copy of the service bulletin;
The purpose of this bulletin is to inform you of the release of a
kit to address drivability issues relating to Softail and Dyna
Glide model motorcycles, specifically those equipped with
carburetor Part No. 27492-96.
On certain Softail and Dyna Glide model motorcycles, in
stock configuration, the fuel mixture may be too lean and
cause the bike to run rough. This condition can be corrected
by installation of the carburetor update kit, Part No. 27365-98.
The kit is available to customers experiencing this drivability
issue on the affected models. See Credit Procedures.
The Carburetor Update Kit, Part No. 27365-98 consists of:
Jet Needle Part No. 27255-96
Main Jet Part No. 27114-88 (Size 180)
Float Chamber Assembly Part No. 27287-98
The kit may be used on 1996, 1997, 1998, or 1999 Softail 49
State motorcycles and Canadian and Japanese HDI versions.
All 1999 Softails built prior to January 15, 1999 have the old
carburetor and may be updated with this kit. All 1999 Softails
Thanks for the info, that makes sense. I will leave it off and get a new float bowl. One more thing does anybody have a pic of the stock accelerator pump nozzle or a break down on a carb off of a 03 bagger, the carb had a dynojet kit in it and I want to make sure it wasn't messed with.
Hey miacycles; Don't mean to hijack this thread, but does that mean that the late 99's had the 180 main jet? When I got my 99 used a couple of years ago, it was running a little lean on the pilot jet with the K&N air filter and drag pipes. I pulled the bowl off, and it had a 42 pilot, and a 180 main. I have a 99 HD manual, and it says it should have a 170 main. Just curious. I replaced the 42 with a 45, and it is much better. Sometimes I think that the 180 is a little to big, but I rarely get on it anyway.
Yes, However many riders drank the "kool-Aid" and went larger with both the pilot and main jets as a matter of course when they changed pipes and air cleaners.
Thanks miacycles; That is what I kind of figured, and I knew you would no for sure. I am still getting close to 50 mpg, and my plugs are a very light tan, so I guess I will leave it alone. Thanks again. Jim
Wow Jim, 50 mpg, I know I wouldn't touch it. I would be so happy. I'm trying to help mine. I'm now thinking of a lower shield, remove wind deflectors and try that. A course your bike is much lighter and no shields.
Do you run syn oil?
No Holster Maker; I run Castrol GTX 20-50. I have also run Harley dino, and they both seem about the same. I do have a Harley quick detach windshield that I have on the bike most of the time. It is kind of funny. I filled up with gas 100 miles from home, and on the trip home I had about a 35 mile an hour tail wind. When I got home I filled it up again, and got right at 54 MPG. I was also running at 50 and 55 mph. My normal mileage is from about 48 to 50.
Well I got everything finished up the other day. I reused the stock chock bracket. I heated it and bent it backwards, drilled and slotted the hole to fit the CV choke and it works great.
I ended up about 2 1/4 turns out on the idle with a 46 pilot and a 185 main. Bike runs harder then ever and I went from high 30's in mileage to 42mpg.
