Default Looking at doing a open primary on my 88 FL

Hey guys im looking at doing a open primary on my 1988 FLT Evo and every open primary i have seen is for 90 up? I have read it has something to do with a splined shaft on the trans vs a tapered shaft on the trans? any help would be greatly appreciated.

90 up is the splined clutch for sure but you see open primaries on Shovels so they must be available, you just looking up the wrong model.....try looking under Shovelheads.

I think the FLT uses the same short primary as the FXR....I think. The reason I say this is my buddy has an 80's FXR and he is trying to do a belt drive on it as well. We went to Departure (a local Indy here in Richmond), and he found two company's that did make them for that setup. Both setups were just over two thousand dollars, AND you needed to buy a late model starter as well. For the life of me I can't remember for sure the two companies who made them, but I remember the prices quite well. I think in your case I would call Karata, Primo, and BDL directly and ask for part numbers, you might be OK. I would not trust the people who answer the phones at Jireh and JPCycles. I would give THEM the part numbers and ask if they could get it once I had them from the manufacture.

I agree with bikerlaw. I would call BDL or Primo.
