The 89 uses a different configuration to mount the TP rack than the 93 and later does. If you look at the "hoop" the mounts for the saddlebag/fender siderails are on the hoop. on the 89 there's a tab thats welded on the rear frame tubes for that job. I'm sure that the earlier frame can be modified for the later hoop, but I would think it would be easier to modify the hoop to fit our frame since we already have the rail mounts on the frame. The hoop is really only needed to have a lic plate mount in our frames. At least thats the direction that I'm going in to be able to have the quick detach TP on my FLHS, JMO though, I havent gotten to that part yet. Still have to get all the electrics worked out and then the suspension, before I get tothe TP part.
I think I'm going to go ahead and locate the 3 parts, I always like a challenge.

I did some pre measuring.....nothing solid, but it looks like the hoop is real close to a fit. The only thing I think that I have to change is to cut the mounting area off the hoop and then make an inside slip tube and drill some holes to mount the whole thing up t the 89 frame. Then I will have the tourpack on the late model quick release bracket setup. When you go to the TP quick release stuff, Kyryakin make a relocator mount that makes it so you can space the TP farther back than stock for more passenger room.

Doesn't your frame already have the holes for the hoop tubes to slip into? I know Neil got the quick release to fit on his from a 97 and really the backend of his frame looks the same as mine but have you gotten any different definate information to the contrary? I'm going to see our local parts guy Tuesday to order up some parts.
The TP relocator wouldn't do be any good because wife rides her own bike.
Yesterday I finally got out for a long ride and noticed a huge differnce, I don't know if it was the weight reduction or what but she sure was peppy.

You know I've always had a problem with the "later" because I've always thought of the later as being like our 89\s compared to Neils newer 95 but yes your quite correct with the round compared to crimped style and would explain why the tube on mine has the nut and bolt going from top drilled through to bottom but really I think its easier putting a crimped into a full (crimped ) tube and modifying by simply drilling 2 holes in the sides,its hard to tell if Neils 95 is crimped from his pictures but I'm thinking they are and as you've said its only the holder for the license plate bracket.

The nut and bolt you refer to replace the original pop rivets. I removed them on my bike and bought replacements, but they are much bigger than your average pop rivet and I wasn't going to go out and buy a bigger gun just to fit them. I suspect that has happened to your bike at some time!

Neil I've been looking for the rear hoop part 47440-92 and have come to the conclusion that I will not be as lucky as you in finding one. As for the newer one is 53376-97 this is only the back plate for the plate, any idea what the part number is for the newer bar the back plate bolts to?
I've got all the parts lined up from Zanotti's except for tha bar.
LMAO I'm sorry for being such a pain but I think I finally get it. I see now that you've actually modified your tour pack mount to just fit onto the connection lugs on the piece thats mounted below the plate bar. nope thats the more modern one, but apparently they are pretty much the same although i havent tried it.
I havent modified the tourpak mount locations in any way, they are fitted as per the instructions, the only mod i had to do was to space the top bracket out by 1/8" as the 96 up FLHR is a bit wider.

the par number for the tube is 53422-97, i was very lucky getting mine, i rang around every where to get one and found a harley breakers yard in the US who had mine.
If it was me doing it on your bike i would start off just buying the hoop as thats the only bit that your gonna have issues with i think, the rest of the kit just bolts up to existing parts.
And yes my hoop is the crimped type, the frame rails on mine are not a full circle more of a half circle with a crimped rear. Nothing that cant be changed!
if it comes to it you can always not bother with a hoop at all, get a licence plate holder that goes below the tail light and leave the back end open, im sure i have even seen some little running lights that go into the ends of the frame rails, kurakyn or someone else made them.
