I'm gonna buy one if it can deal with 500# or better ! The fxr is supposed to have "the best frame ever made by HD" I would think that a good pair of stiffly sprung shocks in place of the most likely junk 20+ year old air shocks would make easy work of my bulk, my wife, and some camping gear. As we are now, we can only throw a few essentials in a tank bag as our S3T will only reluctantly tolerate about 400# .
My book shows FXRT 86-90 at shipped weight of 640 and a GVW of 1085. The GVW seems to be governed by the tire's weight limit. I know the newer tires are rated for more weight than they were back then.
We have a couple that has one around here, he is at least 300 and she goes a good 250+ and they ride all over the place. Haven't seen them broken down by the side of the road yet. I've seen them at Laconia which is a decent ride from here plus up and down the mountains. I don't know if they changed the suspension, but I would guess they probably did. Hope this helps.
well, if you are worried about how much the saddlebags can hold, the Clam Shell type on the FXRT are rated at 50lb (I think) each. But one thing I found out (the hard way) is to make sure the plastic "Hinge" used on the bottom is good. I had my bag packed and riding along the highway. The hinge broke and all of my clothing was out along the highway. I checked the other side and found that they both were in pretty bad shape. I have had friends replace the hinge with piano hinge. I is stronger, but it does not look as good. I just found some OEM hinges and replaced them.
Thanks Guys ! Hopefully I will find one for sale at a dealer so we can thoroughly test ride the thing. The 445# cap. according to mountainkowboys book is a little less than ideal (I'm 6'3" 270#) but as miacycles points out that's probably conservative and with a few upgrades could be beefed up a bit. Ultra89,the s3t buell bags shake themselves into junk ,mine are but a conversation piece. sounds like the genuine HD bags are a little more durable if hinges are the biggest worry. I hope to find a bike with the trunk as well (just to encourage overloading) I will most likely change the stock exhaust and air cleaner, swap the enclosed chain for a belt if feasible and ditch the radio . That will buy me about 20-30 pounds i bet.
