I usually go three at a time for "coarse tuning" then dial in from there.
when touring i carry a few extra discs, i add them when anticipating day after day of highway speed operation, emphasize the HP.

use antiseize on the screws, start them by hand, then you can use a drill or electric screw driver to "run" the screws.

don't over tighten as the discs can be deformed

and be careful you don't break the nuts off the baffle- they are a weak point on these.

tuning, what worked for me.

88 FXRP 9.6:1 comp, modded CV carb, cop ignition, stripped to under 400 pounds: ST 2/1 with 20 discs. This bike has stock gearing but 61T rear pulley for overdrive. So I am tuning the pipe for torque to make up for the overdrive, when stock 1989--- I think I ran 24 discs

1995 FLHTC stock 80" modded carb, stock headers, supermeg slip ons nominal discs for in town: 12 rt, 6 left- add 3 each side for touring.

2009 FLHTC stock 96" stock no cat headers, same supermegs 15 rt, 8 left add a couple for touring

open end cap ( closed course) is equal to 10 discs

the nightstick open end cap is slightly smaller probably equals 9 discs.

Thanks Mike, good stuff. I hadn't thought of travelling with extra disks, but it makes sense.

I've stopped listing the things we should carry! My SuperMegs got me from home in the UK to Budapest in Hungary and back home in May, without ever thinking about discs, just riding along on a wonderful flow of smooth effortless torque! Leave 'em at home and enjoy.

Doesn't make sense to me. Once my bike is tuned it's good to go anywhere...no further adjustments required. The Evo is like an old tractor, doesn't take much to make it happy. Tune it and enjoy the ride.

- the reason being you can emphasize torque or HP ( within a range) by subtracting or adding discs. this is part of the beauty of the S/T system.

I live in a city, with stops, starts and turns with nearby mountain and canyon riding, my "nominal" tune is for torque.

when I anticipate 10 to 12 hour days of highway riding with only a few stops, I add discs for HP as I will be at 3500 rpm or higher all day long.

as always, your results may vary- it takes minutes to change discs- and sometimes I achieve the same with snuff r nots ( I bought a bunch when white brothers died
