New to HD , former big Goldwing site " guru ".
Purchased a 1990 FLT ex. police and am looking forward to HD air cooled vtwin heaven.
I do my own wrenching and the HD is not only the one bike i have always wanted to own but is also MUCH easier to work on than the Wings.
My questions to those in the know are ...
1990 EVO with 70000 miles on the clock.
What are the modern equivalents to the oil and plugs.?
Have learned 20/50 motor oil is best . Synthetic ???
What is best for primary and trans. oil ? Again , Synthetic ???
What is best for replacement spark plugs ., irredium . etc.?
Any help with adding the latest good stuff to this excellent motor is appriciated.
Will google to all other EVO owners.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't know all the answers, but I keep getting HD lubricants for an answer. So that's what I am using. As I understand it, if you use a synthetic in the primary, it HAS to be HD. It's actually cheaper than most of the other common brands anyway.

The oil in the primary does not have to be HD.
I'm not going to open the oil discussion again but you don't have to use HD oil anywhere in your bike if you don't want to.
You can find many threads on what oil to use in your bike here.
Autolite 4265 copper Plugs
Castrol 20/50 dino oil in the motor - (Harley 77A filter or the black one)
Redline shockproof in the trans-(unless you ride in really cold weather)
Harley primary oil
I use Harley Formula+ in the chain case, and the transmission. I use Castrol GTX 20-50 in the engine. The only thing I would say is to run dino oil in that bike since it has a few miles on it. Synthetics tend to leak on EVO's, and the dino oils work just fine.
OMG... I know you meant well, but you have opened up a can of worms here that has been gone over FOREVER with no apparent conclusion... lol. Hey, congrats. You have purchased probably one of the greatest bikes--EVO engine!!--ever made. Reliable, interchangeable, easy to work on, and VERY flexible in garage shadetree mechanic desires.
I am in the middle of upgrading/refining my 70,000 mile originally a FXSTC now unrecognizable part FL, part FLSTC, part FXSTC. My rear cylinder base gasket started to leak, a common problem. I used a SIFTON gasket kit replacement/upgrade that has the brass tube fittings that help drain oil at the base of the cylinder. Also, went with Wiseco 10.1 pistons, Andrews EV27 cam. New lifters. All easy to do, and I will post resutls eventually.
Thanks to all .
As usual , many different answeres to a veried question .? In my opinion ... i offer that synthetic oil is best in motor , primary and trans. applications. ? You just cant beat syn. over any other !
I would like to know what viscosity rating is best for the primary and trans .for a 1990 evo.?
If you must run synthetic, 20-50 in the engine, 10-40 in the chain case, 75-90 gear lube in the transmission. You might have some clutch slipage with synthetic in the primary. The only thing that really needs lubed in there is the chain. Watch for leaks on the base gaskets, and transmission seals. I tried it one oil change and both places started leaking on mine, and I went back to dino. No more leaks.
