Default starter kickback

Just put a new cam and programable ignition in my bike. About half the time on cold starts i get 1 or 2 revolutions then a bang in the primary sounds like kickback on the primary chain. I have to repush the starter button then it starts. New battery and tight cables. I'm thinking I might have the ignition advanced too far. Its running real good other than that. Does anyone think it might be the timing?

Yep Check the timing, a lot of the new ignitions allow the engine to turn over a turn or two before it powers up the ignition. You also might want to check the primary chain tension, if it is too loose it will exacerbate the condition. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Already checked chain tension. Its an ultima ignition so I think it doesnt delay spark for a rev or 2.

Just checked it is 0 - 10 revs programmable. I just backed off on the timing a bit and it fires right up nice. Didnt have instructions so I didnt know . Had the timing advanced as far as possible without pinging so I had space to play with it. I dont own a timing light so I just set it by feel. Amazing the difference a degree or 2 makes.

I have the dyna 2ki which I'm pretty sure is exact same as the ultima programable. The site does have instructions http://www.dynaonline.com/skins/down...t/DDK2-17C.pdf . I think its basicly turn crank to tdc on front compression stroke put the tdc line on crank dead centre of hole and adjust back plate until the green lite just goes off.

I believe it comes with it set at two, that's where we usually leave it. Ridemy evo gave you the correct dope on the initial set-up. Once you have it set to where it doesn't ping, back it off a little more to cover any bad gas, more heat, etc.

John you suggest setting at curve 2, would this make for easier cranking to start the engine? I had mine set to curve 1 last year and bike ran fine but it does labour a bit cranking the starter and I'd like to get easier starting without losing any power. Even today after last week resetting the back plate after some cam cover work I'm finding it labouring to turn over, almost like its fighting the compression.
The reason I had it set to curve 1 is I considered my engine stock but then again it has a HQ cam and 5 over pistons ( which really I thought was as close to stock as could be).
Which brings up another question what is considered none stock?

Which ignition do you have?? Different people consider different thing "stock". Basically I figure if it isn't the way it came from the factory it isn't stock.
