Default What is this and why?

Had the bike stored since November, Uncovered it today, put in the battery and fired it up. Took a few seconds, but she fired up, idled rough for a minute and then came to life, sounded good and normal.

I noticed this thing (don't know the name) was spitting oil all over the place, and I come to the wise ones to find out why.

What is it and why did it dump oil all over the place?

It seems to have stopped now, rode it a few miles and it seems that all thats left leaking down is what was in the area. But I am monitoring it.

Any advice?

Crankcase vent is what I am going to guess.

Looks like a crankcase breather and filter to me. Oil "sumped" while in storage and had to go somewhere. As long as it has stopped, life is good !

Harleys with high mounted oil tanks have a tendency to allow oil to sneak past the check valve in the pump when they set for a long time. This oil sets in the crankcase and when the engine is started it whips it up and forces it out of the vent. Once the engine runs long enough to suck the oil out of the crankcase it stops. That's why you should always start your engine and let it run before you change the oil. If you just drain it and it has sumped, then you add the correct amount of oil you will be overfilled. Hope this helps.

Take the filter off the breather hose and route the hose so that it is pointed down and outboard of the rear tire. Toss the filter into the trash can.

Mine is earlier than yours and is a bottom breather and it did the same thing. Its been 7 months since she last ran, I put the breather back on after that. Otherwise I get oil on the ground in front of the rear tire...........bad things happen with rubber and oil, so I ALWAYS use a breather and just clean it once a year.

As others have mentioned, it is common for oil to seep past the check ball and gather in the crankcase when the scooter has sat for an extended period of time (over the winter) and when you fire it up the oil is "spit" out the crankcase vent. Outside of being messy, it's not a major problem, however it can be ( usually ) resolved by replacing the check ball and spring ( Items #22 and #11 ) pictured in the link I provided you. It is a simple repair and is generally successful.

Also I'll suggest that you always check the oil level in your scooter AFTER you have started it .... this gives the oil that has seeped past the check ball a chance to be scavenged and put back into circulation .... Hope this helps!

I replaced my whole oil pump with an S & S unit...and it still sumped every year. I just drain my oil before storage...replace it in spring...problem solved.
