Guys last yr when I got my bike painted my tank got painted with the gas cap on and I'm wandering if the cap got sealed up from the paint and with the issue I\m having right now with the new carb leaking out the overflow after its been sitting for more than an hour I;m thinking I may try a new gas cap. . What are you guys using for a gas cap? Near as I can tell mine is a rad cap but I know rad caps have differnt pressures.
By the way right now I have the bike sitting with gas on and cap off to see if my theory works.
If it leaks with the gas on, your float valve thingie in the carb is dirty/corroded. Replace it. If it leaks with the gas off, then not only is the float thingie bad, but your petcock is bad too. Sorry doode, no easy way out. Just fix it.

Check the brass overflow tube in the bowl for a hairline crack or improper seating. I know it sounds crazy, but i had this happen. Had a crack from the top to about 3/4 down the tube. Cleaned it up, soldered it up and no more leak. It drove me crazy for weeks until an old timer told me to check it.

I had read that on one of your posts during my search.

I just got email back from Dale, this isn't my old carb rebuilt but brand new from him. The float level is set when the carb is assembled, however there is a range from 0.413 to 0.453 measured from the gasket surface to the bottom of the float in the just closed position. We normally set the float level at 0.435 thats the low end of the spectrum and as the float valve wears it will get higher. The fact that it only leaks after it sets for a while means that the float valve is not making a 100% seal and the fuel in the gas line is slowly overflowing the bowl. This is somethig that never happens we spend alot of time making sure that the float valve assembly is perfect and they are presure tested before final assembly. I think you should send it back, and you can do that anytime at your convenience. When it arrives we will fix it and mail it back the next day as mail here arrives at 4:30 pm. I will reimburse you for any shipping expences. In the mean time if you let it run for a few minutes after turning off the fuel that will keep it from leaking gas all over your floor.
Really sorry for the inconvenience just let me know when you send it and I will make sure it is in and out of here in 1 day.
Thanks,Dale

That sucks to be without your ride, but that's is awesome service if you ask me.
Ya no doubt great service, Dale has been very responsive.
I still have my old carb, I didn't want to send IT in for the upgrade but decided to go new. My wifes bike still has the stock carb on her 89 Heritage and may need an upgrade to a CV one day.
I pulled the carb back off and pulled the float and examined the float needle with a magnifying glass and I can see where the rubber tip is showing a seat mark about half way all the way around. The seat to me does look a bit sharpon the seat edges. I decided to pull out the old carb and try the float needle from it in this new carb. Gas is turned on so will see.

Sounds like your on the right track. Have to agree that sounds like excellent service and it does look like next week is going to be a little bleak at least in this part of the province.
Good luck
