I'm one of the members with an 85 FXWG. Bought mine brand new way back then.
Just replaced the original carb with an S&S last year. The original was still working, but I figured I would upgrade since I was doing cam, pistons and whole top end.

What is the best oil that you reccomend for the bike?
Are you working on the brake system or changing engine oil?

Oil and filter is a religious discussion. My Evo (and many out here) does not like full synthetic. I use Genuine HD regular (non-synthetic) oil and an OEM filter from Toyota (get it at the dealer for $5) for a 22R motor.

Well this has been sitting for 12 years. I am going to change it out and see if I can get it running. Its not locked up and has plenty of compression when kicking it. I have to go to Ada and look at that this sunday.

I want to thank everyone for helping me here.

i just got a 87 sportster. the guy said it had been in storage since 94. it took a battery, fluids, and tires, and a whole lot of cleaning.. it runs great. you would never know it sat that long..the ones that you have to worry about are the bikes that broke down and were parked/forgotten in the yard or in a dirt floor shed for years

That sounds awesome. I will pick up the oil and change it all out Sunday. I cant wait to hear her running. This will be great.

I do have to get a front master cylinder for the brakes. So how hard is it to get a digital copy of a service manual for this bike???

That thing looks great. I would leave it stock, so many have been butchered and customized over the years it very hard to find them mostly original these days. 3m makes a finishing polish that will do wonders on the old paint, I would try that and run the original paint. I can get you the part # off the bottle if you want. I just did a partial restoration on an 84 fxst, and that candy red paint is a bitch. If you do want to keep the stock look, buy a mikuni carb kit. I was able to connect the mikuni choke cable to the stock one and retain the choke on the dash, works/looks awesome.

Bikes like that done come around a lot, especially at the price you paid. Polish and clean it up, get it running right, and you will easily triple your money. My advice is to leave it as original as possible.

You are right MrLexus you are right about not finding one of these stock. I will keep stock paint and will polish it out. I do have a small dent that can be popped out I believe on the left tank. Are the stock drag bars what come on it from the factory?

I am going to change oil in her tomorrow and got a new battery. Going to clean carb and see if it will fire.

As far as triple my money that sounds good but only problem then if I sell it I wont have it no more!!!!!!

I think they came stock with buck horn handle bars, that's what my brother's 86 has.

Buy an original parts book for the bike off eBay. You will be surprised how many parts you can still get, just by typing in the stock number at Jp cycles or Dennis Kirk

And it would have had buckhorns stock.
