Well went and worked on her and changed the oil. I went to put the new filter on and it would not fit....... Got it at Fort Thunder but wouldnt work so put the old one back on. I did find out that it is the same as the shovelhead filter not the evo filter. I was talking to my buddy who has a 1996 FLSTC and his has the filter in front of the engine and mine is in the rear of the engine.
I put some gas in her and it never would get any to the carb. Took the fuel line off the petcock and it had gas in it. The line still had the crimp on clamp it had never been off. I took the B12 and sprayed in the carb to clean it out some and hit the starter and it fired up as long as I sprayed it in. The motor sounded awesome and not a puff of smoke. Of course it did blow a lot of rust out of the pipes!!!!!
Correct me if I am wrong but the wide glide in 85-86 is the only big twin with the kicker and electric start and 4 speed tranny. Also if my buddys Evo has the oil filter up front and my is in the back that means the wide glide used the Shovelhead lower and the Evo upper correct? I mean that would explain the difference with the oil filters best I could tell.
All you gurus out there let me know and I love this forum it is awesome!!!!!

You're gonna have to rebuild that carb. Spraying carb cleaner into the throat of a carb does absolutely nothing to clean the carb. The damage is inside the carb.
Wow! That is some time machine you picked up for $2k. You did good. All good points I've read so far ....compliance fittings and Keihin butterfly should hit the junk pile and find a CV and new intake. Looking forward to seeing it all polished up. Enjoy it.
Well the filter I got had the wrong threads in it. The threads on the filter I was given had a larger threads than the one I have. The filter was about the right size but just would not work.
I am going to go through the carb but just wanted to hear it fire and it did. I was wondering if it would being parked for 12 years in storage. So what kind of intake do I need to find and where can I get one? I do want to make this a runner for sure.
I would look on ebay or check the back room at your dealership for a CV carb and intake from a 90's evo.
I still don't understand your filter issue. I wonder if someone put a "custom" filter mount on that bike. But then 84/85 was a very difficult time for the MoCo, as they pushed anything they had out the door to try to stay in business as the bankers and hedge fund community was circling them, trying to buy the company up so they could destroy it and sell the pieces off at a profit. Yeah, the MoCo came -><- that close to being eliminated for a few million in "profit" to corporate raiders.
If you are trying to use another brand of oil filter, get a proper one from your local H-D dealer. The filters for front and rear mountings are the same.
PM me if you want an original 1985 carb in good running condition. It has intake and good compliance fittings. Not saying its your best option, but if you want originality, I have one Recently taken off. I am original owner.
