Default Ate a stator.

My stator went out this weekend. I was on my carbed 95 flht, 200 miles from home.
The closest dealer was 140 miles away, in the wrong direction.
I checked the stator and it wasn't putting out any AC voltage.
There were no unusual noises coming from the primary so i figured the rotor was ok.

I bought a trickle charger and booster pack and charged both my battery and the pack all night.
I disconnected the headlight. I unplugged the rear turn signals and running lights and removed the bulbs from the front signal/running lamps.
My tail light is led so it has a negligible draw.
The front and rear fender lights were still on.
I don't have any idea of the amount of current the electronic ignition draws. It's a Crane hi-4.
The radio was off but it has something running on the led display while the ignition is on
I bought the booster pack in case the bike battery didn't last all the way home. I can always find a use for it around the garage.

I fired it up, drove down the mountain and stopped for gas so I would have enough to make it home.

I chose to travel across 65 miles of desert to the interstate because there is much better cell phone service on that route.

I made it home in about 3 hours with enough charge left on the battery to restart it later and drive it up onto the table.
I should hook up a meter to the battery and see what is left in it.

I wonder how far you could make it on just the battery?

I pulled it apart and picked up a new stator and started to install it.

How far do you push the the stator wires through the case?

Do you push through until the first flap passes through the case and pull it back against the case to make a seal or does that flap remain inside the hole to make the seal?

Just curious. Did the inner primary have to come off ?

When I did mine theres a recess in the plug that the little plastic retainer that holds the plug in place in the primary fits into. Just line em up. You shouldn't have any of the "flaps" sticking out of the primary.

Went through the same situation: stator gone, just a "click" when hitting the starter. Not sure what kind of juice is required to keep running, but I bump started mine, rode a 100 miles to the closest dealer as I was a LONG way from home. 2 hours and almost $500 bucks later I was cruising again. Was actually surprised that they would work on the EVO: lots of places won't touch them anymore !
Glad ya made it home.

When my stator went I got home with 6.6volts remaining in the battery (still running)....if you disconnect the lights they go a long way on a charge.

First clue I got was the rev counter stopped working, then the indicators, then the speedo.

My stator went out a few weeks ago. I went to the hardware store, came out and hit the button (click). 1985 FXST Last year for stock kick start. Got her home to the garage. Don't know how fare I could of gone I only was 5 miles from the house. Battery had 11.5 volts. I got the new stator bolted up I'm having issues with the rotor clarence. The rotors' hitting the stator windings. I bought a V-Twin aftermarket kit comes with every thing but directions. The rotor in the kit is different than the stock one. They gave me spacers in the kit and i think I'm using the right ones.

On my '98 EFI....I was only able to travel around 50 miles or so. I was riding along and noticed the volt gauge was below 10. It definately was not charging. If it was carbed.....it would have made it further. Fuel pump and all those sensors require power!

The bike was towed home......this was several years ago though.
