OK, you had power because the starter would turn over when you pushed the button on the starter. However no power elsewhere, so check out the main fuse/breaker, then the ignition switch, then the run/stop switch. lastily the power wire to the handlebar switches which should be an orange/white wire. Hope this helps.

Agreed, but how do you "check" the ignition switch? I have the bike apart now and I can't see any bad wires, but every now and then, when I turn the switch to ignition, the dash lights come on and go right off.

Does jiggling the switch do anything? If it does, might mean a bad switch. Still sounds exactly like the problem I had that turned out to be a bad battery connection. Did you check the other end of the battery ground cable?

Listen for clicking contact breakers.....jiggle the switch or unplug it and hot wire the bike across the loom connectors for the switch and see if the lights etc remain stable.

Jumper a wire across the ignition switch and see if this solves everything. If so, it's the switch. Otherwise start pulling connectors apart till you find it. A volt/ohmeter would probably be pretty helpful also.

There are aftermarket ones available, some are even better than the stock part but I don't know what make that would be, we get them here and they come in a plain box.
