Need help here! While doing a filter change on my '89 FXSR I noticed the filter mount base is loose. How do I tighten it? Maybe have to r'n'r'starter? Sure appreciate any advice Cooter
I believe you use a big allen key to tighten it but I could be wrong....but its all held together by the threaded piece you screw the filter on to.....or the later ones are anyway.

Hey Spanners, I found out the base plate has a bolt form the top that threads into that threaded piece you mentioned. The bolt looks like it's almost right underneath the starter so I'm think'n the starter gotta be outta there---maybe. thanks for the reply
Gotta pull the starter.
Here's a little story for ya:
Mine worked loose on a club run from Nashville to Daytona for BikeWeek back in the early-90's. Had no idea there was a problem until we were at a rest area for a break, and one of the Brothers pointed out that my Evo was leaking oil. Sure enough...once the mount had worked loose...the extra weight on the oil lines had caused one of them to leak at the clamp. Nobody had the tools it was gonna take to pull the starter on my 85 FXRS. (I never left home again without them tools). In this case however..Big Nose 1%er( GBNF) ran back to a truck stop we'd just passed where he picked up a double ended brass hose barb. When he got back to the pack...he tossed it to me, and said "hook them lines up together...just bypass the filter". Easy enough job...got it done and we took off again. When we got to Daytona and stopped for gas....one of the guys in the back of the pack came up and told me "you won't have to worry about that filter mount...it bounced past me a few miles back". Sure enough, it had worked itself completely loose and FELL OFF. Once in Daytona, I did a quick oil change with no filter while we were there and rode home before replacing the mount.
I didn't have to disturb my starter when tightening mine up, although it is a while since I last did it. Just stare it out and see if you can do it another way!
Thanks for the info guys. Good road side fix Quido ! I will r n'r the starter and git 'er done. Got some other items to check as well so I'll do them together. Ride far ride safe Cooter
