Default Help with clutch issue!

Ok, 86 flht, had the motor gone thru month ago, all is good, Im riding back 5 miles from home after a 150 mile ride (thank God) and turn corner/ down shift, go to pull in clutch, snap! cable is good, it is in tranny! the lever on trans is no resistance, old style trans. Is there a spring in there I can replace no prob? Not to mention it is the worst storm we have had since Debby a few weeks ago. I have to rev up motor let off, to shift no clutch to get it home... Any ideas?

Billy

You could have snapped the cable inside the transmission cover. Just pull off the tranny cover the problem should be obvious.

Default Shiting issue

wish it was that easy, all cables are brand new. it is an early 86 with the arm on the outside top of the end cover, that the cable connects to.. I can move that arm with my hand. Is there a spring inside that might have broken?

the clutch release lever inside the 6 sided cover on the right side most likely broke. it's an easy 1/2 hour fix. the part is about $10 or so. drain trans oil, take the cover off and the fingers are attached to the clutch lever on top of the trans.

+1 for the clutch release fingers hiding inside the right side tranny cover. I have gone through two over the years on my 86 FXR. Replace the small bearing race in there as well as they tend to shatter quite often.

Yup, clutch finger thingie. I'm on my 3rd in 26 years, although this one has been in there >20 years (knock on wood). I have a spare in my tour pack. I recommend only using Genuine HD, not aftermarket, and also make sure your clutch is adjusted properly at the basket (per the shop manual, using the straight edge,) as I think that if your spring is too tight, that contributes to the things breaking.

Do your research if it's the fingers as the early evo units did not run the oil slinger... Mine does not have one on my 86 FXR. I do have a full slinger kit in the shed that I plan to see if I can retrofit one day - but why 'f' with something hats not broken.

Ok, think I have found the issue, wish I had my phone, daughter has it lol,the pics of the parts are crazy. The fingers as you all described it on the arm, are worn alot, the two spacers and bearing that are on the endo of the pushrod? the roller bearing was non existent I mean litterally not there any more and the outside piece wore in half the inner one, I thought was part of the shaft had to beat it off and grind it back flat.. Now to wait a week for my local HD to get the finger thingy in!!!...
