either stick penny's between spring to spread it out then as it is installed pull them out when done or they should fall out after installed or remove nut on top of kickstand swing kickstand forward toward front tire install spring on stand and bike and swing back and install the stop and the nut really easy this way.

+1 on the pennies: I put one end of the spring in the vise and bent it, inserting pennies.
Jam a long screwdriver in the hook end and lever it onto the bracket under the frame.
Often the spring won't cure it and you need to push the (loose) frame peg forward and weld it in place and then put the original spring back on.

put it up on a jack stand. leave the stand down,there's no tension when spring is down. Remove the top bolt that holds the stand itself in place and slide it down and out. replace spring and reinstall. That's how I did mine.

Thanks everyone. I replaced the spring by: 1) placing some blocks under the bike frame, 2) removing the leg bracket cover to access the bolt at the top that secures the leg, 3) loosen or remove the screw, 4) removing the screw, 5) swinging the leg toward the front , 6) hook the spring and pull back in place, 7) replace the screw and bracket cover.
It all took about 10 minutes.
