Default Idle glitch

Small thng going on yesterday after a long haul, I stopped at a light after coming off the hiway and my idle was up around 1500 and it wouldn't drop back down. I know it wasn't the throttle cable as I tried blipping the throttle and making sure the usual play was there. By the time I got home after going through town it was back down to 900 rpm in the driveway.
So what could cause this?

Thanks John I did check both while sitting at light but of course couldn't check for air leak. I wander if it just wanted to go back out on the hiway to seek and eat up some more twinkies?

Mine does that (95 fxstc) and when get to red light, I'll ease the clutch to the friction point and it goes back to normal. I think I may need to lube the throttle cable?

I've never oiled up the throttle cable only because it always had good spring to it especially for a single pull. Plus I've always told myself to buy two new ones so I would have a spare on the bike but have never gotten around to it,plus Im not sure on the length but I guess I should get it done.
