Default Samson True Duels

Has anyone on here put a set of Samson true duels on a '90s Softail? I bought some pipes from them that are for a 2007 and up Softail. One of their tech support people assured me through emails (which I have) that they would fit a '98 softail and that the only difference is the 2007 up ones have O2 bungs which I could buy plugs for. I put the plugs in and attempted to install the pipes last night. There is no way in heck the rear header will fit due to the O2 bung hitting the seat post and keeping the flange from seating. I am looking for a picture of the head pipe installed or not without the O2 port to see what I can do. I am hoping Samson will swap rear head pipes with me since their tech support assured me the pipes will fit. If not, I will either eBay them or whack the O2 bung off and and have it welded smooth.

Just out of curiosity why did you buy pipes for an '07 instead of ones made for your year bike?

I was looking for a specific kind of pipe and look. That being 4" mufflers, black and true duels. These where the only ones I could find anywhere. Since they were in stock, I asked Samson if they fit and they said yes. So did the place that sold them to me. In fact, the guy that sold them to me just emailed me and swears they will fit. I figured the manufacturer would know if they fit.

Hi All,
Just to clear the air here when Harley changed their frame in 2007 on the Softail models we had to redesin the rear pipe, not just because of the O2 sensors, but because of the way the pipe had to be mounted on the left side as well. rerouting that rear headpipe and retaining the full diameter of the pipe without having to "squish" that rear pipe so we could achieve best flow characteristics. I hope this clears the air on getting the right pipe for the correct year bike. When Harley throws us a curve ball we swing at it....
Thank you,
JR

I understand that now. Kenny was very pleasant and very helpful on the phone. I really appreciate his help. It is unfortunate I was given bad information by both Samson and the seller. The company that sold me my pipes is insisting that Samson is wrong and that they will fit on my bike. Since I bought the pipes from them, I believe I have to go through them. I am waiting to speak to one of the higher ups there. If they do not own up to the fact they were wrong, I am kinda of at a loss on what to do. I am out $900 with a beautiful set of pipes I cannot use and a finished ground up custom that cannot be finished. I am stuck between the manufacturer and seller right now. All I want is a set of pipes that fits for the $900 I spent.

I'm not sure how bad the plug is hitting but can you just grind the plug down a little until it fits?

I was thinking about that. According to Samson more changed than just the header pipe on the left side. Right now I am trying to get the dealer to own up to the mistake.

As an update, the company I bought these from as decided to send me an RMA and take the pipes back. They will exchange them for the correct ones. I really appreciate the help Samson gave me this morning in information and providing me with an email stating these where the incorrect pipes. So, now I get to box them up this evening and wait on the RMA number so I can send them back and get some new ones!
