hey all.
I put some Avon venoms on my 98 fxd less than 3 years ago. Today before a ride I was looking them over and I found the front has dry rot in the treads. I keep it in a garage with a plywood floor when I'm not riding it. I forgot to look at the date code before I came in to post this, but I know they were within a few months old when I bought them and put them on myself. I checked. This front is nowhere near being worn out, but I'm going to have to replace it. The sidewalls are fine, just the treads and just on the front tire.
I actually had an AVON tire on my old chopper and it started to rot and seperate after a few years but with only about 2000 miles on it. It did sit for about 8 months while I was finishing up the build though before I started to really ride it. I contacted AVON and they hooked me up with a brand new tire. Only thing is they had to send it through a dealer. So I found a local indy that would receive the tire and they of course mounted it up for me. Just take some good pics of the tire and send them a note. You never know!!
First check the date codes, next what do you clean your tires with, what pressure are you running in the tires>> Check Avon's site as they reccomend different pressures in some applications. Lastly do you have a propane/natural gas heater in the area where your bike is stored??? The vapors that they give off can/will shorten the life of rubber and neoprene materials.

No gas/propane heaters. Clean them? The rain cleans them for me. I keep them at HD's specs. for inflation. I did a little google research and didn't have any trouble finding others complaining about this. There was some kind of recall with one of avon's models, need to get more info to see if there was for the venoms too. I am planning on getting in touch with avon to see what they say. I understand they are decent to deal with. Maybe they will buy me a new metzeler for the front.
I've run Avons on my Harleys since the 70s and other bikes since before then and never had problems of that sort. But then they haven't had to wait all that long between rides!
