my guess is its in the transmission -------------the shift collar that acutally puts it into gear has broken or fallen off------------or one of the heim ends is shot not allowing it to go in all the way and it jumps out of gear when the clutch is let out and starts to put a load on the trans-------------------------I have also seen splines wore out on the mainshaft do this but it usually has a ratcheting sound unless someone doped it with epoxy to get rid of it

Yup, it's coming apart one way or the other. Kinda sounds transmission like to me.

regardless of symptoms you gotta start at the simplist things, first (don't ask how i know this, and i'm sure not the only one)...and just work your way through it, exploring and examining

you'll find the problem.... =-)

Dang, almost sounds like the belt broke.
Do you get the 'clunk' when you put it in gear? Did you try any other gear? Hard to believe the tranny would just crap out like that without some kind of warning noises or hard shifting.
As said before, drain the tranny fluid, look for metal. Next would be to remove the outter primary cover and do a real good inspection. You can even start it up but be warned, it will be messy.

how about you put it in gear with the engine off and rock it back and forth------see whats going on then--------------------you should be able to hear it handily if it is spinning thru the clutch which I doubt. But you should hear transmission noises to

Sounds like drive belt to me......have a good look at it and see if you can pull the thing off.

If its clutch then its likely a circlip or spring because the clutch is not engaging.....most other clutch problems would result in it not disengaging and it would stall when you put it into gear.

Tranny is a simple beast so I am picking drive line issues and that may also include the compensator sprocket nut coming off the end of the crank.

Test procedure for you is this:

Is drive belt still attached?

If not then pull outer primary and check everything you see.

Keep us posted, too ofetn we don't get to hear what the fix was.

Sure sound quirky to me.

If the clutch lever feels normal but isn't engaging, and you can roll it in gear with the clutch lever released (engaged), then something catastrophic has happened to the clutch.

Simple things like a fractured throw out bearing, bad cable, or cable adjuster loosening up and altering the clutch adjustment setting can be ruled out if the lever feels normal.

It would seem most likely the cable, or mechanical internal adjustment components became loose and have backed off but if you can put it in gear and roll it like it's not in gear then I'm considering a loosened or badly damaged compensator the issue.

I offered up some suggestions, but until the outer primary is taken off we're still guessing. I look forward to hearing this story play out. Best wishes tracking it down.
