I think that's a great model to rebuild. Because you'll be doing it on a regular basis.
Look for an 86 up (evo Sportster) instead. They sell in that price range.
Clearly you have never owned one....I've had three and the only breakdown I ever had was an aftermarket belt primary, POS that thing was, put a chain back in it :-)

Sorry, Spanners. I've owned one. A 197... Darn.... '75, I think. First year of the shifter on the left. Bought it in boxes for $550. It was Dr.Linda's first bike. S&S Super (NOT a "E", a real Super), Andrews cams that looked like this (upside down) |_|, drag pipes. It was fast. A previous owner removed the starter, so it was kick start only. It would only start after you were REALLY MAD, like "I'M READY TO KILL SOMEONE OR SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!" then it would start, as you were obviously ready to ride it. I would have to kick start it for her, in the Texas heat. She did kick start it once. The 883 was (still is) SO MUCH of an improvement.
I dunno, back in the day we had real bikers, ones who used to cross themselves and spit when they saw an Evo ;-) ones who thought electric starters were for pussies and cars :-)
Now, where can I get me a shovelhead with bald tyres.............
