Default Two ball bearings

I bought a 1997 Ultra Classic with a bad main bearing and in about a thousand pieces. In addition it had set for about 8 years. Several months later, I am almost finished. I went ahead and stripped it down and painted the frame, powder coated all of the chrome (except the engine) and rebuilt the engine. I am now ready to assemble the oil pump. I have two ball bearings, one is about 1/4 inch and goes into the top left of the oil pump followed by a spring and a cap, according to the manual. Does anyone have any idea where the smaller ball goes? I don't see it in the manual anywhere, but it was in a bag labelled oil pump. That doesn't necessarily mean it goes to the oil pump as other bags were mixed. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Default ball, check valve

I referenced my parts book for my 99'evo. The check ball is 3/8 diameter - part number 8873. I don't see another ball on the diagram. However, I have a Softail. Is there any differnce between oil pumps?

DG, you can look at the microfiches for your bike on Ronnies H-D website, on their 'parts finder'. You can see every tiny bit that goes into your bike! There is a separate page on just the oil pump, and as ironoxide says, there is only one ball, #8873.

Could be one of the three ball bearings that fits in clutch ramps inside trans side cover.

I believe everyone is correct that there is only one check ball in the oil pump. In the boxes of stuff that came with the bike, I found another unopened oil pump rebuild kit and it has only one check ball. I took the transmission and clutch apart myself, and am sure that it was not one of the ramp *****. This one is smaller-- but I will double check tonight. This small ball bearing is the only part that is leftover. Any other ideas where a small ball may go???? Thanks in advance.

It coulda been anything ,shoot - cylinder stud installation procedure calls for putting a ball bearing inside the headbolt to torque the studs. As long as your oil pump's complete, save everything, and keep going.

I'm going to install the oil pump, cam, breather etc. tonight. I would like to fire it up this weekend. I just had a thought the ball bearing might go in the ignition switch??? similar to the three bearings in the clutch. There were so many of the parts that were mixed together, new and old, at least two of everything, and some things that aren't even Harley parts. This has been like a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle with a couple of handfuls of pieces from a similar puzzle thrown in. If anyone has any different ideas please let me know. Thanks
