She lives again!
it's possible that it was just the final straw...realistically, this bike's had 3 top ends done, now going for the 4th (original from factory, first build, rebuild when the piston grenaded, and now head gaskets (one each cylinder). could just be fatigue from loosening/torquing repeatedly....i dont know. the primary side studs have had (zero) issues.
valves have never hit the pistons, and pistons clear the flat part of the head by ~ .050"+ (i clayed them, but tricky getting an exact measurement...i'll just stick with "plenty" of clearance on both)
the rear's been fine since the timesert fix, and it was the morning after a ~ 250mile ride that the front started giving me trouble (was backfiring through the carb, I thought an intake manifold bolt has loosened, as I was getting a bit of a leak (confirmed with brake cleaner)...come to find out, it was coming right in the head behind the rocker arms...again.
all is well with the world. Bean told me flat out "my dyno breaks hearts" (Mustang Dyno...reads "very low" compared to most rigs out there)...but managed to be one of the highest HP/TQ 80" evo's hes ever tuned
I do think I might bump the redline back to 6500....she's still making HP @ 6k when he cut it off (current redlines 6200)...oh hell who am i kidding, she stood up in 2nd gear. I aint touching a thing.
i'll snap a picture of the dyno sheet (forgot it in the saddlebag, and its late). 83ish TQ, creeping on 85hp. figure in the "fudge factor" for his lower-reading dyno, and it's rather impressive

overall, smooth as all hell, and pulls like a freight train. I do definitely need an oil cooler though. hauling back down to Mass, temps crept up past 280F, and when i pulled into the rest stop for a drink, shot straight up past 300 before I shut it down.
