Default Not a good day. Couple Questions

While in process of replacing lifters today, I remove my back lifter block to find it is cracked. Great... remove floor board, take exhaust off, pull cam cover to make sure no metal shavings got in cam case. all looks good. Look up parts, check bike over make sure nothing else I need, and I see an exhaust stud threads are stripped, go to remove exhaust stud with extractor kit, SNAP! Broke damn stud off flush with head! Awesome. Now I have to remove head, bring it to machine shop and get them to remove broken stud.

My bike only has 11,000 original miles on it, but my rear cylinder base gasket is weeping, so since I am this far into it, I am going to replace it but think I am going to keep pistons and rings in cylinder and just remove wrist pin being I am on a budget...

I have an ev27 cam right now, and would like to get a little more out of it. Would it make sense to have heads shaved to bump compression being they are going to machine shop anyways?? 9 or 9:5 was kinda what I was thinking? That would be about .060 off, right?>

Also, Can you re-use stock head bolts when you pull them off, or is it recommended to replace???

Thanks for the help guys!

if you're gonna pull the heads, shave .040" and run a .030" gasket. will get ya right around 9-9.2:1, oughta wake up that ev27 a bit.

even if the piston pops out, i cant see you doing any damage by just popping it back in. you're not swapping pistons, or rings, so as long as the right piston goes into the right jug, should be no harm no foul.

Jasper's right. Also, Hillside will probably agree. If you need a second opinion, check him out. He's located in New York. He's built many higher hp evo's.

Thanks guys! so shave .040 off heads and go with .030 head gasket? In your opinions, is this a reliable streetable set up? I will be dropping heads off at machine shop tomorrow to try and get bike together by weekend.

Also, Do you typically replace headbolts, or reuse them?? Thanks!!

Here is a pic of the lifter block.

Imo, I would take your cylinders to the machine shop, have them run a ball hone thru them, then buy a wiseco or compariable pistona and throw them in. I've never been a fan of decking the heads, it changes quench area and manipulates intake angles, set the bike up at 9.5 to 1 and let her eat, change inner cam bearing , use some good lifters and yes, u can reuse the stock head bolts. Good luck. Chad

I have the Torrington cam bearing, Brand New HD "B" Lifters. I really don't have the money to swap to Pistons right now, so I am kind of either shave the heads, or leave them... Wiseco's are about $320 plus $80 for machine work. I can deck the heads for less then $100.

Don't take the head off, weld a nut to the broken stud (can be done even if its flush) and wind it out with a socket....do it all the time down here.

Then ignore the base gaskets until winter.....

Good quality base gaskets should solve the oil leak, also I agree with changing pistons rather than shaving metal off things! I also agree with Spanners about doing the minimum to keep her running until winter, when you can take your time.

Q: are you confident you found the all broken piece(s) off the lifter lifter block?

But once you take that material off. You can never put it back on, it makes the head less servicable for the future,
