Default jackshaft starter....and frustration!

hey guys i have a 97 bad boy evo that i am struggling with, here is the run down.

my starter went out(really rough starts not always engaging) so she got a new one.

1/2 day riding and busted a pinion, mechanic said probly micro fractures and it was going to go. the good news is the ring gear still looked great. She got a new pinion.

again 1/2 day riding and busted pinion. this time i am told my fault cause i over torqued the jackshaft, but this time she ate my ring gear. so i ordered a stalk 102 tooth ring gear, drilled out the rivets and installed and put the drag specialties one pice jackshaft/pinion.

again 1/2 day busted pinion! ok i correctly torqued this one. what the **** is going on??? now i notice an oil leak from the back of the primary!

sorry for the short story i am just frustrated and its getting too long.
so my questions for your gear heads are...

can my new starter i installed be misaligned? causing too much force on the pinion?

as far as the oil leak, where would that now be coming from?

ideas? thoughts? comments?
thanx

I have heard that starters can be misaligned.
Not sure how to check that.

As for the oil leak it could be coming from the seal in the back of the inner primary that the starter jackshaft goes through.

I would check the bushings in the inner and outer primary that the jackshaft goes into As far as the leak goes put some new seals in sound like you nicked it putting the jackshaft in or the bushings are really bad and took the seal out IMHO the 102 ring gear was not one of HD"S best ideas I went with a 66 tooth 9 tooth pinion way better for strength

With the new drag specialties jackshaft I put a new rubber seal in. I thought the same thing too...

I wonder how to check the starter alignment? I have googled it with nothing and no notes in the service manual...?

My starter went bad on my 97 heritage and I was in a hurry to get it back on the road so I bought a aftermarket starter. Broke the gear twice on the end of the jackshaft plus ate up the ring gear once within 18 months. Rebuilt the original starter, put new gears on, never had another problem,,that was 4 years ago..

You know raddazz you are the 2nd guys to say this.... My local mechanic who I order parts from got me the drag specialties 2.4 as my replacement, said it would be best and a little more power. "Highly recommended" When I told an old timer I ride with he was pissed and said I should stick with harley parts when it comes to motor parts. I don't know I am in this for $500 and just trying to replace my starter. I have a 10 day ride in 3 weeks and just getting pissed

Thank for your reply

I had this issue a few years ago. Ate up a ring gear, pinion and jackshaft. The culprit turned out to be a weak battery and a tired starter. New 102 r/g, jackshaft, starter, battery, triple checked all the electrical grounds and starter wire and I've been good for over three years. Sorry I can't help with more specifics.

If you are running an 80" EVO there is no need for anything that strong.

Your mechanic is an idiot!
Sounds like he wanted to make a big sale.

I really hope you aren't letting that guy work on your bike!

As for a drag specialties starter pull it and trash it.
Harley OEM, Spike, or All ***** are the only ones I would use.
