I am thinking about replacing the exhaust on my 1996 Harley, with the clamps tight, the mufflers still come out of the pipes. What is the best exhaust for the money available?
Take the pipes off and look at how the ends are made to close down around the header. Those funky cutouts will jam into each other because they aren't made quite right. Take a file or a dremel tool and make more clearance so the end of the muffler can be tightened down better.
Now get ahold of those clamps and chuck them up in a vise. Tighten down the bolt then look where to beat and bang to get them to tighten up more. It's been awhile but if I remember correctly the ends of the clamps (where they bend tightly) interfere with the bolt tightening.
When you put it all together get the clamps all the way on the ends of the mufflers so they clamp down right over those funky cutouts.
I did this to my Road King and it works. Doesn't cost anything either.
